Car Insurance Explained

Car insurance is a legal requirement to drive in the UK. Here's the difference between third-party, third-party fire and theft, and comprehensive cover.

Car insurance is a legal requirement for driving on UK roads. There are three standard levels: third-party (the legal minimum — covers damage or injury you cause to others, not your own car), third-party fire and theft (adds cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire), and comprehensive (covers your own vehicle's damage too, regardless of fault).

Comprehensive is often not the most expensive option in practice, since insurers price it based on overall risk rather than the level of cover alone. Price depends on the driver's age and experience, the car's make and model, where it's kept overnight, and claims/driving history.
