Contents Insurance Explained
Contents insurance covers your belongings inside the home — furniture, electronics, clothing — against theft, fire, and water damage. Here's what it typically includes.
Contents insurance covers the things you own inside your home: furniture, electronics, clothing, jewellery, and other personal belongings. It protects against loss from theft, fire, flooding, and similar events — as distinct from buildings insurance, which covers the structure itself.
Most policies let you choose a level of cover based on the total value of your belongings, and many offer optional extras like accidental damage or cover for items you take outside the home (a laptop or phone, for example). Renters typically need contents cover but not buildings cover, since the building itself belongs to the landlord. Homeowners usually need both.
Pricing depends on the value of what you're insuring, your postcode, and your excess choice — a higher excess usually lowers the monthly premium.
